Slot Tournaments Explained, What are Freerolls? Freeroll Strategy, Different Types of Tournaments

I play a lot of free slot tournaments and I have won plenty of free cash from them over the years. I'm not a freeroll expert, but I have picked up a few tricks about how increase your odds of winning, so I thought that I would share.

I usually play freerolls when I feel like gambling, but don't feel like losing my own money or making a deposit. It's also fun to get a free shot at cash. Some freerolls don't have a huge prizepool, but a 10 minute freeroll may save me $50-$100 by giving me something to do instead of making a deposit.

Please post your own tips or tricks below to help other NoLuckNeeded players increase their odds of winning.

What are freerolls?
Free slot tournaments, also called FREEROLLS, are a great way to make a little extra gambling money and get some free action. They are offered by many casinos as a reward to loyal players, as a promotional tool, or to get people in the gambling mood in hopes that you'll deposit after you play a free tournament.

Freeroll Prizes and restrictions
Many online casinos run freerolls, and most pay the prizes into your casino account as "cash", in other words tournament wins usually don't have playthough requirements or maximum cashout rules. There are a few exceptions to that, so it is important to read a casino's terms and conditions. For example, some casinos only allow depositing players to play freerolls and some casinos limit the amount of prize money a non-depositing player can win in a freeroll.

BEWARE: A few casinos (such as inetbet), consider freeroll prizes "bonus money" and as such, their prizes have terms and conditions including a maximum cashout rule.

How to win Freerolls, Freeroll Strategy, and Different Types of Freerolls

Freeroll strategy differs depending on the type of tournament. All tournaments give you a certain number of chips, but depending on the casino software, you may have a certain number of minutes to play your chips or you may have until the tournament ends to play your chips.

For instance, RTG software tournaments
give you x amount of chips and x amount of minutes to play those chips, and you play until all your chips are gone. For RTG tournaments, I always bet the maximum amount allowed per spin (Usually 100), and click as fast as I can because you may run out of time and have chips left over. In RTG tournaments, once you start playing the clock (the minutes you have to play) will keep running whether you leave the tourney or get disconnected. You are done playing when your chips run out OR when your minutes run out.

WGS software casinos (Examples include Intertops Classic, Miami Club, ect.) are sometimes different. You get a certain number of chips and have until the tournament ends to play. This type of tournament makes it wise to check the leader board and see how many chips you need to win a prize. When playing that kind of tournament, your starting balance and wins are together. You may stop playing at anytime (or you are forced to stop when you run out of chips). If you make it to a spot that pays a prize, you may want to stop playing and guarantee yourself a prize, instead of risking more chips to get a higher spot or bigger prize.

Rebuys and Add-ons
Most tournaments (including freerolls) these days have add-ons or rebuys for a price. Rebuys give you a new shot at the tournament, so it is like starting over and your highest score will be used. Add-ons give you extra chips and time to play your existing score.

Some people go crazy with add-ons and spend more money than they can make in the tournament. It is wise to only use add-ons and put your own money into a freeroll if it makes sense financially. For instance, you are ranked 10th in a tourney and 10th place pays $5, but add-ons cost 50 cents and give you 2000 extra chips to play and 9th place pays $15. Remember to check the leader board to see how much more you need to make it to the next spot. Also remember other people may use add-ons and the people ahead of you may play more if they see your score has beaten them out of a spot. Don't bet $20 to win an extra $5!

Good Luck and happy gambling everyone!

I agree with you TDTAT, I have observed pretty much the same things, especially in regards to add-ons!

I have won a couple freeroll tournaments. INetBet, though you say on their stipulation on the bonus monies, seem to be the most fair and possibly the most likely anyone not using their own money to win at. As it goes for RTG. However WGS freerolls are insane on the Chip count it takes to win..... But don't play to win it all. Play to get free money. If you look at their payouts. They pay quite a few spots. I have noticed in WGS if you bet ridiculously high, that is usually what gets you moving on the leaderboard. Like the 3 real slots with 3coin bets. If I start at $5-$8 max bet. I usually hit. Keeping the flow up is where I struggle. On the RTG's though. I tried reading on strats, in the past. They strat I found said. Bet Max all the way. Well, I'd like to argue that point. I say if your playing a 5min 5.000 tourney. Go all out. Because if you hit a feature, chances are you wont zero out your balance. Now if your in a 8min plus with a balance of 8-10k Go big for a few rolls, then fluctuate your lines bet. Not your denomination. Ever. Because the lines bet will still pay the same if you hit a line with maxbet or not. If the line that hits is played of course. But I have noticed that Slots are finniky to lines played or bet amount. I usually give a roll of 3-5xs. If it pays less than 3x's the amount wagered. I fluctuate. I use this same principle in reg slots also. but you will see. you may play Coyote cash, have 16 lines played, and swear you hit a bigger pay, that you ever have with max bet. Seriously. Don't get nervous on Oh but the max bet with the feature. Like I said. the game will pay, if it wants to pay. Also. I recommend this stratagy, because on the longer timed tourneys. Your balance will be depleted with 3 mins to spare some times. If you are lowering and raising your bet. Their is more of a chance to trigger a feature.

This is how I play tourneys. At Inetbet I do well. Because of the fact they dont do the crazy add on stuff. Re buys are cool. But be careful. If you dont read the description. You may just Re buy with a 1min and 1k on a normal 5min 5k tourney

I've noticed the same as above everywhere. I've also found that slots will streak hi for awhile which makes you want to bet higher. The issue I have is if you go to high you will soon bust.learn to stop and come back later as soon as you don't get return

I have pulled down my fair share of tourney bucks over the last 2 years. I have also blown at least as many wins by not stopping when in a winning position. With that said watch the board, if you have the time.
I noticed that you left out a very important strategy for WGS sites. There are 2 different types of scoring used to determine your standing.
First is the Variable score, which simply means that your ranking score is the same as your chip count. If you spend all your chips, you have a score of 0. You start with a score that is equal to the starting balance.
Second is the Accumulated score. With this type of score all your wins add to both your balance and your score, your score never goes down with accumulated tournaments, only up. You start with a score that is 0.
As you might think, the strategies for each are different. For the Variable score games, the strategies discussed earlier are good. Grow your balance, slow and steady wins the race.
When it comes to the Accumulated score games it can pay to do some extreme betting; a big win can rocket you up the leaderboard and the only way you go down is if someone passes you. Just don't get stuck on betting big, it will hurt really fast if it is not paying. When your balance gets low, pull the bets down and grow your balance using the strategies for Variable games then when your balance is bigger go ahead and try some bigger bets. You can play for quite a while like this. Sure, your standing doesn't go up fast when you are growing your balance but be patient and your standing will increase when you have the balance to push the envelope.
Side Note: Every spin is independent of any other spin. What went before has no influence on any future spins. If you just hit a big win, it doesn't mean that it is any more or less likely to hit another big win. Don't let superstitions play a role in your gambling strategies.
When you are in a money spot check the ending date/time of the tournament and put a reminder on your calendar to check the leaderboard before it ends. If you are still in a scoring position you might want to make a deposit before it ends so that there is no reason to deny any withdrawals due to too many freebies between deposits. Many casinos consider freeroll tournament wins to be the same as a freebie and hence the same T&C's apply.
I hope this helps increase your chances of bringing home the bacon. And remember, Have Fun.

Good Luck,
Teramanujuan
