Oregon Congressman Earl Blumenauer

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) - Four years ago, Oregon Congressman Earl Blumenauer joined the majority in voting to restrict Internet gambling.

The Democrat now says he was wrong.

Blumenauer released a statement Wednesday saying the U.S. is missing out on a major revenue source at a time when it must control deficits and create jobs.

Blumenauer says he has also concluded the restriction is hypocritical, given that lotteries, horse racing and fantasy football were exempted from the rules.

Estimates show that U.S. gamblers illegally wager $106 billion a year offshore.

Blumenauer made his comments after a hearing on the subject before the House Ways and Means Committee.

P.S. I worked in the Commission Office with Congressman Blumenauer when he was a Multnomah County Commissioner.
