Online gambling bill defeated
25 June 2008
By Vin Narayanan
The House Financial Services Committee rejected a bill Wednesday that would have prohibited the Treasury Department and the Federal Reserve from proposing and implementing regulations to enforce the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act.
In its mark-up session, the Committee adopted an amendment proposed by Rep. Peter King (R-NY) that would not only stop the implementation of any UIGEA regulations, but would also force the Treasury Department, the Justice Department and the Federal Reserve to sit down and define unlawful Internet gambling. King said that this "was a banking issue, not a gambling issue" and that the banking industry shouldn't be in the position of determining what is legal and illegal.
The King amendment was defeated by the full committee with a vote of 32 for and 32 against. The original bill proposed by Rep. Barney Frank (D-Mass.) and Rep. Ron Paul (R-Tex.) was defeated in a voice vote.
The defeat is a blow to both the online gambling industry, which has been looking for ways to repeal the UIGEA, and the banking industry, which wants no part in trying to regulate the online gaming industry.
"The PPA is surprised that the Financial Services Committee today failed to clarify what constitutes 'unlawful Internet gambling' under the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act (UIGEA)," said Alfonse D'Amato, chairman of the Poker Players Alliance. "The King Amendment would have required a separate formal rulemaking with an administrative law judge to determine the definition of unlawful Internet gambling."
"The Federal Reserve, Department of Treasury and the banking industry have all testified before Congress that the lack of a definition of 'unlawful Internet gambling' makes it extremely difficult if not impossible to enforce this law and would result in a broader review and denial of financial transactions because they could possibly be deemed unlawful under UIGEA," D'Amato added.

All,
You know it makes me stop and wonder about our country. Why would the "powers" that be worry about a bunch of people who gamble their hard earned money for pleasure, knowing what they can afford to spend while doing it (hope I'm right here) and try to stop it.......while making bill after bill to help the big banking/mortgage loan offenders recoup the money they have bilked out of people who COULD NOT AFFORD HOMES THEY PURCHASED WITHOUT READING THE BOTTOM LINE AND SIGNING ON THE DOTTED LINE, then taxing us, the hard working, taxpaying citizens (who sometimes want to play slots, video poker, etc.); and we have no say in the matter.
Someone please answer this one for me. I seem to be clueless!!
Thanks,

I agree with you gwendolyna, we are the ones who make the banks and could break the banks, so why should they care where we spend OUR money?
Alot of this started because of the hackers hacking into computer systems and gaining peoples idenity and bank information so they figured a way to put a stop to having to pay the people back and thats just one way.

Although I agree I don't want any one telling me how to spend my money, we have to be honest here. There are people who spend money they don't have or that should be used to pay for that car you mention. Unfortunately gambling can be and is for many an addiction and people who are truly ill will do as bad of things as any drug addict to get their fix. Having said that I don't believe any government bill will change that, their barking up the wrong tree, those who are ill need HELP as they will only find another means of feeding their addiction.

Honestly, people gamble with or without the bill.
If our country wanted to pay for 20 Iraq wars, all we
have to do is tax and regulate online gambling, like
our friends in the United Kingdom.
The ultimate thing to remember is that Las Vegas and
every Indian casino in the United States pays billions
of dollars to lobby the congress to pass stupid legislation
that tries to limit online gambling.
The United States of America loves to legislate morality,
even though we supposedly have a seperation of church and state.
I could go on forever, but show your views by the candadites
you vote for! VOTE in every election, for all levels of government.
Be informed on the views of you state and local government canadites.
OF COURSE ALWAYS be informed on the views of your senators and congress people.
