I used to drink ALOT - day and night. I didn't live to drink, I drank to live. when threatened to lose custody of my children, I went to detox (A hideous place) and then to treatment.

It was 20 years ago today that I quit.

I have gone through a lot of changes over the years, made a lot of mistakes, but I didn't drink. I slowly drifted away from AA. My family (except my daughter who has many problems of her own right now) doesn't really talk to me. So, I don't think that there is anyone aware that today is a special day for me - except for you now.

I am not looking for pity, I just wanted to share this day with someone and this is a place I thought I could go and get some support.

Thank you for reading this, I feel embarrassed Embarassed Embarassed but I am going to post it anyway.

gjr1961,

I personally think that you are a very brave, intelligent woman for sharing your story. I applaud you for the bravery it takes to freely admit that you once had a problem and that you were strong enough to overcome it, then you were aware enough to share it with others who may have gone through and/or going through the same trials of life.

I want you to know that I will think of you often and you are in my thoughts and prayers, not for what you have shared with us, but for who you are!!!

Your friend,

gwendolyna

Dear God don't be embarrassed!!!!!!!! My dad was an alcoholic and it was tough growing up. One of the best things you did is come here and tell all us. Three weeks ago my mom had a stroke and I came here for comfort and asked for prayers. The responses I received was overwhelming. People here gave me such comfort, people I don't even know. She has since passed, and again I came here for comfort. I have even made a very close (yet far away) friend through all of this.

This is the strangest place. It is really like a little family for those of us who are "regulars".

You should be so very proud of yourself for what you've done. And shame on your family for not realizing what an accomplishment you have made.

Trust me, you will probably be reading some of these responses with tears in your eyes.

God bless you and keep up the good work. I will say a prayer for you tonight.

Signed,
A Friend

Never, ever be ashamed. Be proud.

My late husband was an alcoholic for many years. He had his last drink the day his father died, who was also an alcoholic. I know first hand how very, very tough it has been for you to remain sober for 20 years.

I commend you for your strength!!

You shouldn't be ashamed at all. You should be very proud of yourself. Very Happy You had the strength and the courage to do the thing that most other people that was in your situation can't or never do. I know because I've been there. I had to put up with my father's alcoholism (not to mention his family's alcoholism) as a child.......which led to his death in 2002. I try not to think about it.

Kudos to you, gjr1961!! Keep it up!!! Congratulations Icon_syda Icon_syda

What an accomplishment!!! 041 Congratulations
Never be embarassed by your successes!!! First it took a lot of strength and courage to face your problem and get the help you needed. Second to remain sober for 20 years, that just shows your determination to remain the success that you have become by choice! Third, stand up tall, hold your head up and be proud!!!!
You've come a long way and thanks so much for sharing your success story with us!! This is an extended family, in so many ways!!
Again Congratulations
