Ghost in The Funeral Home
Well, This is a totally true story trust me I lived it! Anyways here goes ... one night me and my friends were cruzin' downtown in my 91 Buick (total piece of crap) which is a big ol' boat of a car so it is very VERY hard to push when all of a sudden the car started to shake very violently then stalled. I tried to crank the key not once but three or four times and the engine was dead silent (it wouldn't even turn over when I cranked the key).

It was only about 9:00 or 9:30 PM when this happened. None of us had a cell phone so we were obviously going to have to walk for help. We got out of the car, turned on the hazard lights and pushed it to the curb and we started walking in search of a phone. It was kind of a rainy night which made it like 10 times worse - lol.

We walked down a couple blocks and the only place in sight that could maybe possibly let us use their phone was a funeral home and by that point it was pouring rain so we really had no other option.

All four of us jogged up to the doors of the funeral home, shook what water we could off of ourselves and walked in the doors (thank God it was open). A blonde woman in her 40's was sitting at the front desk. As soon as we walked in she asked, "May I help you?" We told her our car died about two blocks away and this was the only place within walking distance to use a phone.

She sat and stared at us for a few seconds and finally said, "I can let you use the phone in the break room if you want to do that", then she took my friend Andy into the break room to use the phone

When he was gone the rest of us were waiting in the lobby trying to get warm. I was checking out all the pictures and stuff on the walls when I noticed the viewing rooms. I started to walk towards what I'm pretty sure was the chapel (it looked like a church lol), but stopped dead in my tracks when I saw a tall kind of husky man with a little white hair on his head standing at the very front of the room.

He was dressed in a suit that almost looked vintage, like from the '70s or something. His eyes had heavy dark bags under them. I thought maybe he was a worker or something so I didn't really think much of it. I started to inch closer to the front of the room. He didn't move, he didn't even move his eyes. The closer I got the paler he looked. It almost looked like he was transparent. All of a sudden I got a very uneasy feeling and froze in the middle of the aisle. I had goose bumps on my arms now but I couldn't move.

I finally got the balls to move closer. He still didn't move, not a muscle. I stopped again. Just then I heard my friend say my name. I spun around as fast as I could because it scared me. She told me a tow truck was on its way and so was her mom. I nodded my head and turned to look at the man again only to find he had disappeared. In the two seconds I had my back turned he disappeared.

I walked up to the woman at the front desk and asked if there was a way to get out of the chapel in the front and she looked at me very puzzled and said,"No, the only way out is the doors you just came out of," then she asked me, "why?"

I said, "the guy working here just scared the crap out of me."

She looked at me puzzled again and said, "honey I'm the only one still here."

I couldn't believe it! I quickly thanked her and practically ran out of there. My friends asked what was wrong. I told them what had happened and they said they felt really uneasy just waiting in the lobby. We were all really truly freaked out by this I will never set foot in that place again!

This is totally true, no bull, see South Dakota has ghosts too!

Aghost story that most so is true. BaaWAAHAWAWAHHAWAWA

The Queen Mary
Long Beach Harbor, California

Moored in Long Beach Harbor is one of the most haunted ships in the world. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, this 1,000 foot long ship’s construction started in 1930, and, being delayed by the Great Depression’s influence, could only take its maiden voyage in 1936. For three glorious years The Queen Mary was the star of the ocean liner industry, hosting people like the Duke and Duchess of Windsor, Clark Gable, Greta Garbo, the Gershwins and Sir Winston Churchill—just to name a few. The Queen Mary held the record for the quickest North Atlantic crossing in her hey-day, but with the outbreak of World War II in 1939, her luxury services were set aside and she became known as “The Grey Ghost,” a troop transport.

During the war she participated in almost every important Allied campaign, including the D-Day invasion. It was during this time in her amazing history that tragedy struck. In an attempt to dodge enemy ships, “The GreyGhost ” maneuvered right into one of her smaller companion ships, nearly cutting it in half. Under strict orders, she left the 300 survivors to a watery death. It is said you can still sometimes hear their screams and the pounding of their fists on her fore hull. As the war drew to a close, “The GreyGhost ” took part in the “Bride and Baby Voyages,” carrying more than 20,000 war brides and their babies to the US and Canada. In 1946 alone, The GreyGhost made 13 voyages of this type.

In 1947 she was refurbished and renewed her job as a luxury liner, running weekly between England and New York. Later she took tourists into the Caribbean, but not being fitted with air-conditioning she was not very popular. In 1967 she was sold to the city of Long Beach, California to be used as a maritime museum and hotel.

Now she is frequently visited by curious tourists. It’s claimed that as many as 150 spirits roam the ship, with the ship herself being the site of nearly 50 deaths over the last 60 years.

The spots where most of the disturbances are located include the engine room, Door 13, the first and second-class pools, the women’s changing room, the first-class lounge, the third-class playroom, the Queen’s Salon and one particular cabin.

In The Queen Mary’s engine room and the boiler room, cameras go dead, batteries get drained and orbs show up in photos. Occasionally cameras simply “give up the ghost” refusing to operate normally until they’ve left the area. In Engine Room 2, people report feeling a sense of dread—perhaps because this was the spot many stowaways believed would be their safe-haven. Instead, when the engines roared to life many were burned. Door #13 in the belly of the boat has crushed two men to death, one a young seaman who lied about his age to get the job he so desperately wanted.People report seeing him, dressed in blue coveralls, hurrying down “Shaft Alley” towards the door before he disappears.

The old swimming pools are also the sites of frequent sightings. Visitors have reported women in wearing swimsuits from the 1930s walking the pool decks. Others have heard splashing or spotted fresh wet footprints. Near one of the poolspeople have even seen a little girl, sometimes clutching a teddy bear, and at other times calling for her mommy and dolly. Is this the ghost of the little girl, named Jackie, who drowned while the Queen Mary played ocean liner? Or is it the little girl—supposedly quite precocious and a child who enjoyed sliding down banisters—who went for a slide and got bucked off when the ship hit a huge swell, the child’s neck snapping as a result of sudden impact? Perhaps the two have even found each other and play together, as many report hearing childish laughter.

In the third-class children’s playroom a baby’s cries are sometimes heard. Those who know the ship best think it is the sound of the little boy who died there, shortly after his birth. Other ghosts occasionally are spotted in the playroom, too—perhaps parents picking their children up from what was essentially daycare, or maybe the caretakers themselves linger, watching for the children still aboard.

A strange vortex phenomenon has also been reported near the women’s changing room, supposedly the resulting negative force because of a woman being raped nearby.

In some first-class staterooms, a man wearing a 1930’s style suit has been seen and phones are known to ring without anyone on the other end. Faucets also turn on in the middle of the night as if someone is washing up after a late night enjoying themselves.

A beautiful young woman in a stylish evening gown can sometimes be spotted in the Queen’s Salon. Some claim she dances alone in a shadowy corner of the room.

But beyond the tragic deaths of children and military men, perhaps the darkest thing still clinging to the Queen Mary is the remnants of one mysterious man’s deeds. Once, a single male passenger checked in, and stowing his luggage, gave a steward some cash to see if he could find a willing female companion to share his cabin for the night. The steward was successful and dropped a woman off for the man. The pair retired for the evening. The next morning, when the steward realized his patron was not at breakfast, he went to see how things had gone. He knocked on the cabin door, but got no answer. Worried, he raced away to find his superior—a man who could open the door. When the door opened they were horrified to find the corpse of the willing woman, her blood spread round the room. They searched for the only suspect—the male passenger—but found no sign of him—no registration information, no luggage… There had not even been a passenger assigned to that cabin. To this day, the man’s identity and method of escape baffles everyone who hears the chilling tale of what happened when twopeople met for a sudden tryst.

Notice the ghostly orb of light to the right of the door of Rose's Room. Rose the prostitute, supposedly murdered by a jealous lover or customer, has been known to still occupy the premises via her ghost.

McMenamin’s White Eagle
Portland, OR

Investigative Results:

Haunted?: Yes, but as usually happens with time, the activity is beginning to decrease. It is a good assumption that eventually most of the ghosts will have moved on.

The White Eagle Tavern was started in 1905 by 2 Polish immigrants. At that time, many immigrants crowded Portland seeking a better life and the promise of work. They came from Europe, Russia, Scandinavia, Poland and the Far East. It became a popular establishment as a hard-working man’s bar, frequented by workers from the surrounding docks, mills, railroads and factories. It was well known for its raucous and sometimes violent occurrences, earning it the nickname “The Bucket of Blood.”

Portland, Oregon has a sordid past. Shanghai tunnels leading directly to the waterfront, were used to transport unlucky patrons onto a ship’s crew. Some Shanghai’s never reached their outcome, and many people died en route in the subterranean passageways.

Women immigrants, who came to America alone and without supervision, ended up Shanghaied and forced to prostitute themselves to pay off their ‘debts.’ White prostitutes were higher priced, and were kept on the 2nd floor. Women had limited rights during this era, and if you were one of these “kept” women at the White Eagle, you had no freedom to speak of. If you were found to be pregnant, you were kept working until your due date. Your infant would be taken away from you upon its delivery, and permanently removed so that you could begin working again as soon as possible. If you became sick, you were ignored and placed in one of the back rooms upstairs to await your recovery, or your permanent unemployment- whichever came first. No worries- there were always more where you came from. You were easily replaced.

The downstairs basement, now offices, housed the ‘cheaper’ prostitutes- women from the Far East and other foreign locales. Also in the basement were the Opium dens. Opium, brought from the Far East, was the drug of choice, and was available to those who had the money. Downstairs at the bar, you didn’t even have to use the bathroom facilities if you were nursing a brew; a urinal had been built right in so you could conveniently relieve yourself. Pool, cigars, liquor, prostitutes, drugs and poker- such a cornucopia for the workingman of the era. For many, such treats were worth paying for- ever risking the threat of a Shanghai arranged by a greedy bouncer and a needy ship’s captain, a violent ending by the hand of a roustabout, or a fatal psychosis courtesy of an Opium overdose.

It is no surprise that there are many Ghosts here- an array of people died violent and untimely deaths under the White Eagle’s watchful eye. The downstairs basement is the spectral home for a couple of immigrant prostitutes who are not aware that they have passed on, as well as an aggressive and extremely large, hulking man who is rumored to have been a bouncer during the White Eagle’s heyday.

The stories of Rose the prostitute, supposedly murdered by a jealous lover or customer, and Sam, the slow-witted Polish immigrant, have helped bring the White Eagle its Ghostly ambience. Both of these spirits can be found upstairs, as well as a few other female spirits- one who we have nicknamed “Brassy” due to her brassy-blonde hair and her haughty demeanor. She certainly enjoys the company of certain males, and Todd was her man of choice during one of our visits. With her arm draped around his shoulder as he walked through the hallway, Brassy certainly thought he was the cat’s meow (Todd wasn’t quite purring though)! Another spirit unconsciously travels between the two rooms in the back, holding her stomach and rocking herself as she walks; eternally doing what she had done moments before her sad and untimely death.
